Can I use Wi-Fi spot on my iPhone when I'm in another country?

I'm going to Canada (from the U.S.) in a few days and want to bring my iPhone. I want to turn off data roaming and I will not make any calls while there. I want to make sure I do not pay huge fees. But I still want to use my iPhone for web browsing and maps while there. Can I still use free Wi-Fi locations (such as that provided by my hotel in Canada) without any data charges? I'm using the AT & T, when I do that, then I think it should cost me nothing. Anyone know for sure? I know I have no problem connecting to a WiFi (802.11) network anywhere, the question is: will it to run my bill from AT & T?

If the same protocol (802.11b / g), then you should have no problem.
