Ok, so I'm stepping on fellow blogger PC World Lincoln Spector Answer territory Line a bit. This week I will start with a problem that a reader Hassle-Free PC sent – an annoying error message on startup IE. I have a nifty solution to this hassle, and a way to speed up a netbook Windows XP, a tool that allows you to retrieve form data in Firefox, and a service that can transform images text for you.

Banish Start-Up Error Messages

Hassle-Free PC player Randy is suffering from a complicated problem. Each time your PC boots, he gets a pop-up window in Internet Explorer with this message:

"Unable find 'file :///'. Make sure the path or internet address is correct. "

I feel your pain, Randy. Things like this can be seriously annoying. My guess is that you recently installed or uninstalled a program that Windows is looking for – but can not find – at startup.

What you need is a kind of boot monitor that will show you everything you are trying to run during the boot process, so you can determine that the Internet Explorer related item is the author – and then turn it off.

If you are reasonably tech-savvy, I recommend Autoruns, a free utility hosted from Microsoft TechNet.

After running it, click the Log On tab and look for any entries that point to iexplore.exe. If you find one, uncheck the box and reboot. Obviously, this may involve a bit of trial and error, but must ultimately solve the problem.

A similar, but simpler, approach is to run the Msconfig utility in Windows, click the Startup tab, and then examine the control column (which you may have to increase the visibility of total) for the entries containing iexplore.exe. If you find a clear option, click OK and then reboot.

Speed Up Your Windows XP Netbook

Most desktops and modern laptops have energy to spare, but the netbooks are notoriously pokey. Therefore, you should disable any operating system features that can make Lilliputians your PC even slower.

If the system runs Windows XP, as most netbooks, here's an easy way to squeeze some extra speed out it:

# Open the Control Panel.

# Double-click System.

# Click the Advanced tab, then click the Settings button in the Performance section.

# By default, the Visual Effects tab is generally defined as "Let Windows choose the best for my computer." Windows knows best?! Hardly. Change the setting to "Adjust for best performance." As you see, this turns off all visual effects XP.

# Click OK and wait a few seconds while Windows readjusts itself. Click OK again to close System Properties.

Meanwhile lets you with a simpler, Windows less visually exciting, it also leaves your netbook dedicate their minimum processing power for more important things, like running applications and data crunching.

Recover Lost Data Form in Firefox

Raise your hand if this happened to you: After filling a long Web form, you click Next or Save or whatever, and poof, failures of your browser server timeout, your connection to the Internet dies – in other words, all your hard work is gone.

As someone who has a blog for a living (a task that relies heavily on web forms) I can not count how many times I've tried this particular nightmare. Too often, let's put it that way.

Fortunately, there is Lazarus, a Firefox add-on that makes it easy to recover lost data form.

Here's how: Lazarus automatically (and securely) saves every keystroke you enter into any Web form, blogging tool, comment box, or what have you. To bring back your data, just right-click and choose recovery or retrieve text form from the context menu. Finally, this feature is already available in Firefox 3.5, in the form of session restoration. (Now if only it were added to Internet Explorer.) Lazarus saved me many times since I installed a couple of months ago. Now I consider an essential part of my life site.

Free Service Turns OCR Image Files text

Remember the old days, when I needed a scanner and OCR software expensive if you want to convert a page of text into editable text?

The old days are gone, man! Free OCR is a free Web-based OCR service that transforms any image file sent to a text file you can load into Word or the document editor of choice.

The site supports BMP, GIF, JPEG, TIFF and PDF (albeit the time that will convert only the first page of a PDF, and an irritating limitation that will supposedly be addressed in future).

The maximum is 2MB, and the service recommends a minimum of 150 dpi. You will also need to give heavily formatted documents for now: Free OCR does not support columns and the like.

Therefore, your mileage may vary, depending on the nature and resolution of your image. That said, the service does work awesome. I used my iPhone to take a picture of a document, and the resulting text file was darn near perfect. So try it! It's free – says so right in the name.
