Can I use an iPhone for an iPod Touch?

My question is can use the iPhone for an iPod Touch. I have AT & T. I also do not plan buy it unlocked. I just want to use it for music and wi-fi. I know you can jailbreak, but I think it's a great risk that can ruin the phone. Someone please help me here. Thank you.
