What is the best solution for cell phone to travel to Europe?

My wife and I will be traveling to Europe for 3 + months in a prolonged honeymoon and was wondering what the best solution is for the cell phone service. Heard unlock an iPhone and buy a SIM card works, but is that ab) entity) the iPhone does not work as would be internally c.) how expensive it is to unlock and what is the best SIM card to buy? It's easier just to get a iPod Touch and use the Wi-Fi and widgets? Does anyone have good ideas on the best fix here – we are not tied to the iPhone and are currently customers of Verizon, but just knew it was a common solution for travelers? We will be starting work in Greece and in our way east by Italy, Switzerland, Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, United Kingdom and ending in Ireland. Thanks for the help.

If you're planning to stay a week or more in one country, will cheaper to buy a SIM card from that country. Otherwise, just use your own phone. Have a nice trip.
