Continuing with our investigation into the CB craze of the mid-70s, let's take a look at what were considered the elite of antennas when it came to be shaped CB. While the truckers may have ruled the roads and channel 19, was the everyday hobbyist who ruled the airwaves of your home, and the rule that they did.
If you were the CB and really wanted to impress people with his powerful voice across the waves that you had no choice but to create a base unit. Not only were units themselves powerful, but the antennas that people put on their roof tops could have given some rival broadcasters a run for their money.
Choosing a CB antenna for your base station was not easy. There was plenty to choose from and they all have their pros and cons.
One of the most powerful, even more frustrating was the ever-popular Moon Raker. This was an antenna beam that looked very similar to TV antennas, most with 3 elements mounted on a base 11 meters. These were called regular Moon Rakers. However, there were antenna beam that had up to six elements on them. They were referred to as a Moon Raker 6. These things were enormous. The problem with them was that the antennas are directional. What this means is that, depending on the direction that the antenna was pointing that was where you got your best reception and transmission. So if you were talking to someone who was south of you and your antenna was pointing north you had to turn the antenna 180 degrees in order to get a decent reception. This has to be a pain after a while. The positive side was that these dishes were so powerful that they could cut anything once you had its target zeroed
Another popular dish base was what was called "Big Stick". This was really just a long antenna fiberglass. They were usually 10 to 15 meters in length. They were not as powerful as the Moon Raker, but they also transmitted and received well in all directions and were large, therefore, all the antennas on purpose especially if you were in an area of central location, where you had a number of people you could talk in all directions. In addition, Big Sticks were relatively cheap next to a Moon Raker which was sold to a couple of hundred dollars. The Big Stick was about $ 70.
For people who do not have a very large budget, there base station antennas made that quite frankly was not much more powerful than their mobile counterparts. When you take the lack of power of these antennas into account against its price tag of about $ 50, which made much more sense to go with a club.
The biggest problem with all these antennas, especially in this day and age, was that they were constantly interfering with TV reception. Today with the cable, things are not so bad.
Even if CB is not as popular among homeowners as it was 30 years, you can still see these bad boys on roofs, if you look close enough. Just make sure you stop the car before taking a look.
