Keep your head down "…" Do not make waves "…" Go with the flow ".. If you hear some of that advice in your workplace? As I said to clients and colleagues, many of you are.

I think these comments are understandable, given our role in the middle of the greatest tragicomedy of our economic lives. But understandable, it must mean unacceptable.

You will not get to the third act, with only luck, although many people seem to think they can. In fact, recent data shows that 50 percent of the state lotteries registered a record increase in sales over the past six months. There are a number equal the winners? Not a chance.

Do not rely on luck for their survival in the workplace. Act now trying the three things smarter you are not doing the job – at least, not yet.

# 1: Making Time to colleagues and contacts.

"I hate networking", said a friend over coffee recently. In fact, the concept of network work evokes images of Deadliest Discovery Channels' Catch, where everyone is stressed, injured, and / or smelly at best.

Most of us do not are tuna and do not like being "caught" in someone else's "net". What do we like? Be respected. To be valued. Honest and frequent communication. Trust. People who look to us. In short – we like a relationship.

You already know what makes a good relationship (even if your spouse / significant other / mother disagrees.) So, let's throw "networking" overboard and start building relationships again.

Stop ping-ing their colleagues and have real conversations with them. Drop the BlackBerry and pick up the phone. Invite someone to lunch, coffee, your conference call. More concerned with interest to be-ed that being interest-ing. All the ways to start building – and growing – Good relationships that will provide the basis for its success in the workplace.

# 2: Calling on the Experts.

"Our budget was cut, "a place of learning and development director told me." I still have goals to meet, but I do not have a dime to request any help. "Sound familiar? Probably. But the reality is that statement… or perception?

Force your favorite professional – consultants, designers, writers, coaches, trainers or other experts – be open to non-traditional ways of working with you on a non-traditional time? For example, they could host a brainstorming session, build a web page, take a Lunch & Learn, design microworkshop either event it moves along its goals and helps to maintain their relationship with you? They could create a product or tool that you can pilot and now they can sell to other customers in the future? Do they simply work for less?

It can not hurt to ask – as long as you make it absolutely safe for them to say "no" (read: without rancor). But how? Try this: "We have good business partners in the past, and I appreciated that. With our current budget cuts, I still need [you need] and was wondering if you would be willing to partner with me to find low or no cost solutions. "

Why the favorite expert say "yes" to this situation? Perhaps they value their written recommendations or references, or would like to use your work with you for marketing purposes or for publication. Or maybe they have an idea that needs a test drive, and you can be the Andretti to their Formula 1. Set clear rules and expectations, and both can win.

# 3: Breaking the Rules

Keeping your head down and avoid the challenge is not the answer – at least, not what will move you and your business ahead. Let's all play ostrich – history shows that times of change are the best times to shake the status quo and break some rules.

We are clearly in a "neutral zone", which author William Bridges describes in his book Managing Transitions as the time after the old ways have ended, but new beginnings are in place. The great thing is that while the neutral zone can be a time of great chaos, but can also be a time of great creativity. What sounds more fun?

The old rules are not running, the new has not been written. Failed business models are out, creating voids great opportunity ready to suck up new ideas. What could be different for your workplace giving broken rules allowed to try? What is the new idea that is now possible for you, if you just break the rules?

Of course, the neurotic paralyzing the economy and the environment is enticing us to play dumb. But we can change The Game with these simple actions. It's time to get our wits back.
