Can I use the blackberry curve JUST the text?

I have to get a phone from sprint and I do not like the rumor that slides out, but I want a full keyboard telephone and the Blackberry has it. I particularly like the orange. Can I buy it and do not use the internet? Somebody said you have to pay for it. Thanks [:
