While there is no shortage of portable gaming systems on the market – the Nintendo DSi and DS are still selling well, the PSP continues to fall in there, while the App Store expands its portfolio every minute – one of the stakes seemingly no-brainer in the realm of mobile gaming has not happened: the Zune.
We say "no-brainer" for several reasons:
* Microsoft has a platform successful games on the Xbox 360, highlighting online and download games.
* Microsoft, in comparison with Sony and Nintendo, the best position to take on Apple in terms of media management software store and the ability to build an equivalent music, games and movies catalog, and making the product compatible PC.
* The Zune now plays HD games.
The first point is obvious. The second is debatable, but we This is because the Sony, despite having a decent media library on PSN, not only is historically a great capacity for cross-platform software for synchronization the PSP, and global reach of Microsoft software is simply stronger. We downloaded and played with all the Zune HD games available today – all 12 of them – with some curiosity to see if the Zune could compete as a gaming device.
In general, the Zune HD games are similar in quality to the iPod Touch and iPhone titles. HD Zune has an accelerometer and multitouch, and the iPod Touch, but its screen is smaller, making it even more difficult to control without feeling ham-handed. Now, in fairness, all games are free Zune and so many are quality demo. PGR with Mark Ferrari, is a set of pared-down, a lite "version." Quality Still, the range of graphics and controls are impressive, and definitely Touch. Other games like Audiosurf Tilt (which generates music tracks) and a Texas Hold 'Em, are better than most freebies, but titles are likely would not pay more than a few dollars.
The most obvious idea would be to expand the Zune HD size a bit, add a physical controller (perhaps similar Go to sliding PSP), and then open a game Zune Marketplace, which synchronizes with the Xbox Live. A major move toward the possibility of one was the recent update Xbox 360 to Zune Marketplace opened a panel 360. Although not currently offer games, Microsoft already allows Zunes and Xbox Live accounts to share digital resources for operations, opening a door for a good mobile game console ecosystem.
The current Zune HD is so small – less than the PSP Go or an iPod Touch to a significant degree – the Microsoft could even sell a clip-on pad (with a speaker, preferably) and still have a portable device that was not bulky. And its price is competitive with PSP, iPod Touch, Nintendo DS, $ 219 for a 16GB model.
What would you want a Microsoft Zune / Xbox portable? I'd say the answer would be yes, provided they are actually used physical controls. And if they were able to corral the Xbox Live Arcade development community (and even the public indie XNA) to make games, could get much faster than anyone could expect.
Now, the HD Zune is not a gaming platform. But even in its present form, could be with a simple change in strategy. The question is, is there room for another platform for mobile games?
