What phone should I get?

Hello, I live in Canada, where cell phone plans are very expensive and I never owned a cell phone. I could use some advice for buying one that I should just go all out and get a smart phone like an iPhone or a Google Android mobile phone or should I just receive an el cheapo?

I love my Iphone, but I live on the dang thing, I'm constantly using the applications, so if you do not think you really need to use all things in it I would not waist the extra money cause a regular old phone is great. I had Motorola phones for years and was happy with them
