Verizon Wireless announced it will offer customers the option to use in its national wireless network, wireless devices, software and applications not offered by the company. Verizon plans to have this new option unfolded throughout the country by the end of 2008. Any device that meets the minimum technical standard will be activated in network.
This is a huge change for the wireless industry known for protecting their networks and the applications and devices that work with them. Only few weeks ago sources reported opposition from Verizon to Google pushing for open access to the source of the 700 MHz spectrum re-allocation. Verizon even sued (and retired), the FCC, which is imposing so-called open-access rules for the parts of the spectrum.
So why the sudden turnaround? According to Verizon, there is no change.
In a statement July 19 Verizon reiterated its position on the auction: we do not oppose the rules of the idea. An e-mail from company spokeswoman Jim Gerace, confirms this is still the company's position. "We still oppose the FCC Rules for 700 MHz," says your e-mail, said that in July that supported the idea of open access, but again I do not think the FCC needed to dictate it. "
Fair enough. Anyone who has dealt with the FCC can agree with them can be a little overreaching at times. Consumers definitely do not want any government agency to dictate the choice.
However we do not want network operators to control our choices either. Until this announcement business plan from Verizon was to do just that: control devices and applications in your network. "The spectrum is a shared resource that must be managed efficiently in order to support the needs of all users, As a recent press release. In other words, Verizon is saying "we limit and control what is on our network, as it is in the best interest of the public which, incidentally, actually owns the spectrum. "
Since the first cellular network was built operators have fiercely protected their network so they could ensure no degradation in service and customer satisfaction. They, after all, is the protector of the Wireless User.
Then the recent discovery that was made to that suddenly Verizon to open its network to all?
No new discovery … without technique, they could have given years ago to open access. Recent developments, bronze, however, have helped the top to "discover" their vulnerability to stay with an outdated model of exploitation.
Here is what I think.
The bold move was a preemptive strike necessary. Verizon is not afraid to open its network, the ability to protect and ensure the technical quality of network service exists. They do not care about the devices, any operator willingly abandon the need to manage a huge chain little or no gain line.
Verizon concern is that a competing network would open your business. Google, which plans to bid next auction of 700 MHz, could pose a threat, if somehow got their hands on licenses nationwide. Add to that the announcement of the Open Handset Alliance (including competitors Verizon T-Mobile and Sprint / Nextel) Android development platform a few weeks ago. Mix in the fact that Google and 32 companies have thousands of OHA millions in cash and you have some very nervous Cellular Network Operators.
It could have been called a brilliant move, if it was done for 6 months. Now, however, it just looks like a strategic decision under duress. In any case, the long term this will prove to be good for consumers and ultimately good for the Verizon.
Some call it a ploy, some feel its simply a move to deter Google from bidding on 700 MHz spectrum, there are still others applauded measure. It can be all three, but as Lowell McAdam, Verizon Wireless president and chief executive says: "This is a transformation point in the history of 20 years of wireless mass market. "
