Google Android sounds like the name of a mobile phone, but not really. The name of Google Android is used to refer to the operating system of the mobile phone. Markets is flooded with mobile phones with these days, and consumers are spoiled for choice. So what makes Google Android so different? And why would someone should begin using a completely different operating system altogether?

Currently, the most popular mobile operating systems on the market is Symbian, Palm, Windows Mobile and, more recently, the OS X for iPhone. These operating systems are all competing for market share. But the similar aspect of these systems operating is that they all are closed systems. In other words, no one else, but also companies can develop applications for the operating system (with the exception of OS X, which we discuss later).

Therefore, all mobile phones that are equipped with these operating systems have limited applications that can be installed.

Recognizing the increasing trend of open network, Google is hoping to change all that with Google Android. With SDK (Software Development Kit) offered by Google, developers can innovate and come with applications that can be installed on the Google Android. We have all seen this concept, taking the Internet by storm.

For example, see the Firefox browser to close the gap with Internet Explorer. It is able to recover quickly, because it allows developers to create useful extensions to the browsers. To date, there are hundreds of extensions for the Firefox browser, and its popularity continues to increase. The same goes for sites social communities. MySpace used to be the site of Top Social community. But Facebook has become popular very quickly, and rose to keep up with MySpace. Again, this happened because Facebook began allowing application developers to launch their platform.

The signs are clear. The open concept works, and Google Android is looking to overcome all the other mobile operating systems. The project is being conducted by the Open Handset Alliance, which is a group of companies formed by Google T-Mobile, Sprint, Vodafone, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and other players in the mobile phone industry.

Eventually, the fans do not may fail to compare with the Google Android Apple Mac OS X. After all, Apple iPhone is hugely popular, and also allows developers to create third-party applications for the iPhone and distribute them via the Apple website. However, Mac OS X also has a limitation – it can only work with the iPhone. So if you do not like iPhone (rare but happens), you're out of luck.

Google Android looks set to become the main operating system. It's just a matter of time. Already, the Open Handset Alliance is working with handset manufacturers to develop Android phones. So do not be surprised to find cell major brands like Samsung, HTC, Motorola, etc., in the near future.
