5 Steps To PC Security
Step 1 – Buy an Internet Security Suite: If you are unsure what a Internet Security Suite is, very briefly, is usually a combination of a firewall and antivirus software. These products can be purchased and installed on your computer separately, but I always advise people to get a combined product that it is less complicated. Internet Security Suite may also include other useful features, such as blocking ad, anti-spam, or even file backup and PC tune up facilities.
Step 2 – Password protect your User Accounts: If you share your computer with one or more persons, would be a very good idea to have your own password protected User Account. When you share a computer, security is no longer his sole responsibility is the responsibility of everyone who uses it. In such an environment, password protect it on its own will not prevent other users download malware, but depending on the circumstances, he can at least prevent the loss of their own data.
If you own a computer shared would be a very good idea to restrict the access of other users. This means giving them limited accounts, so they can use the computer without being able to make changes the system that will damage your computer or affect other users. Administrative accounts should only be given to those who really need it for a good reason.
Step 3 – Beware of suspicious emails: For now, the best way to handle e-mail scam is using common sense. However, here are some things to remember.
- Email addresses can be spoofed. Just because an email says it came from customerservices@paypal.co.uk not means that it really does
- Website addresses can be faked. Just because a link yourbank.co.uk says, does not mean that is where you will be click on it
- In general, banks will NEVER contact you by e-mail and ask you to confirm all the details of any kind
Do's and Don'ts
- NOT respond to a suspicious email, under any circumstances
- Do not open attachments in a suspicious email
- DO NOT click on any link in a suspicious email
- Delete any e-mail you think is suspicious
- THE use of filtering software e-mail (spam)
- OF contact your bank and ask them if the e-mail you sent is true
Step 4 - Use a pop-up blocker: Most browsers come with a feature to prevent these pop-ups … Well, "appearing". Check the help files for your particular browser to see if it has this facility and if this happens, turn it on! Also, beware of messages that appear on websites offering you free antivirus software, free registry scans, etc. These messages are often designed to look like the genuine from your own computer, but they are most definitely not! Clicking on them will certainly infect your computer with malware.
Step 5 – Secure Your Wireless Network: It might interest you to know that, armed with tools freely available on the Internet, a hacker (even a very good hacker) can access a wireless internet network with relative ease. Once access is made he / she can potentially read the files on your computer, see the pages you have surfed the internet, and even use your internet connection for a range of criminal activities. For example, they could use your Internet connection to send e-mails en masse, into other computers, downloading indecent images of children, and many more.
Secure your wireless network, putting password protection on it. Only computers with the password will be able to connect to the network.
If you follow these steps you will be well along the path to secure your PC and your online world.
