On March 6, 2008 Apple released an SDK (software development kit) only iPhone and iTouch. Here is a step-by-step look at the development of iPhone applications and launching:

  • The third developer designs an application for iPhone using the SDK. The SDK can be downloaded free by Intel Macintosh users. The iPhone works with Mac OS X 1.5, so all applications can be developed only on this platform. The SDK also works only on this operating system.
  • The application is tested in "iPhone simulator".
  • The developer has to pay the Apple Developer Connection membership fee to facilitate the loading of applications developed for the phone.
  • Applications can be sold or distributed through the App Store only. The developer has the right to assign a price for the request, but would have the participation of 70% of the the App Store.
  • If the iPhone applications are found to be breaking the guidelines of iPhone mobile application development, then Apple has full authority to prohibit the specific application.

Developers can create applications in several categories, including:

  • Office / business applications.
  • Multimedia applications.
  • Fun / game applications.
  • Internet / web applications.
  • Utility applications and so on.
