We've all seen the LCD touch screens at work around us. Anyone who has used your credit card or debit card to make a purchase in the supermarket, have to swipe your card through a reader and then use a stylus to select and sign the signature line on a touch screen. The versions that are tools can be found in Photo Centers that allow consumers to print their own images or create Christmas cards, discs or memory cards found at your local Longs or Target stores. However, the LCD touch screen is starting to make inroads in other areas, too.

One of the first business consumers think of when the touch screen is mentioned is Apple. Your items known as the Apple iPod touch and Apple iPhone use a touch screen touch to allow the User to navigate without the need for buttons or trackballs. This is not the limit of its use, however. The PC market households is now seeing a number of computers available with LCD touch screen functionality.

How does a LCD touch screen? In essence, is no different than using a mouse or touch pad on your laptop, though touching the display screen may seem counter-intuitive for most consumers (after all, not go to great lengths to keep our finger prints of them?). Touch screen monitors essentially look regular LCD monitors, but are equipped with additional features. Basically, a touch screen is really just another piece of hardware. A thin film lamination of touch sensitive (light) is placed on your computer monitor, which is then connected the computer. The pressure of your finger is converted into an electrical signal, which is then sent to the CPU.

There are two main types of touch screen monitors the market today: add systems and built systems. Built systems come ready to use box, just turn them on and go, although you probably need to install the drivers first, if the system was not designed to use a touch screen. Add to systems are installed by the consumer on your computer monitor existing and then plugged into an accessory to the computer. Again, the device drivers are required to tell the computer how to recognize the signs.

Monitors touch screen, like the iPod touch and iPhone will be accessible to the average consumer, as POS (point of sale) displays touch-sensitive screen will be more targeted for businesses. And how can we forget to mention the glamorous touch screen displays as seen on CNN and ESPN? Yes touch these are very large screen monitors. I'm sure you've seen one in use during the election this year, when the CNN is used to control the Democratic and Republican. These giant screens just mentioned are only accessible and necessary for a few.

There are a number of manufacturers creating these popular devices today. Some of the most popular are planar, GVision, Megavision, NEC and HP. Do your research, regardless of the brand you choose, however. User Forums and reviews can give you the information you need to make a good buy on a device that has a good performance for years to come.
